Each day he goes to work, Victor Ficarra, LAW ’24, is fulfilling an intergenerational dream. Victor’s mother grew up in a family of 12 in a rural, northern province of the Philippines and aspired to become an attorney one day. That never happened, but Victor assumed the mantle, not only earning his law degree from Temple and immediately starting work with major consulting firm Deloitte, but advocating for more Filipino representation in the field each step of the way.

Taxing work. Think filing personal income taxes can be confusing? Try doing business overseas in today’s rapidly shifting landscape of international commerce. Victor uses both undergraduate accounting training and his Temple Law degree to advise clients—including major multinational corporations and private equity firms—on tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions.

“One of the coolest things is just how many Temple Law alumni practice in Philadelphia. I bump into them randomly, walking around the city for lunch or even while attending church on Sunday. Everyone is always so generous with their time. I find that alumni of Temple Law care about students from their alma mater as much as, if not more than, alumni of any other law school.”

A model student. Victor has always excelled academically, attending Penn State University’s Schreyer Honors College for his undergraduate degree. His grades there, combined with a high mark on the LSAT, earned him a full-tuition scholarship to Temple’s Beasley School of Law, a major factor in his decision to attend law school on North Broad Street.

Victor honed his legal expertise at Beasley, where Professor of Law Kathy Mandelbaum coached him through the Law Student Tax Challenge. Flying to San Francisco for the national competition, Victor and a teammate bested 60 other law schools to take first place. Alice Abreu, a Beasley professor and chair of the American Bar Association tax section, also invited Victor to TA for her tax courses and brought him to valuable networking events.

As a student, Victor became very involved with the Beasley community, serving as co-president of the Sports and Entertainment Law Society, staff editor of the 10-Q—Temple’s business law magazine—and on the executive board of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association.

And that ability to network paid off. During an internship with Deloitte, Victor gained valuable, real-world experience and also met several Beasley alumni working there, who were instrumental in helping him land his current job.
